GROWING STRONGER

AS A TEAM

Our Mission

The Stamford Y Aquatic Club provides a USA swimming program that meets the needs of swimmers from entry level to college.  We stress hard work and dedication in and outside the pool successful swimmers need to master essential life skills such as:  time management, dedication, commitment and goal setting.  SYAC promotes youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Team Philosophy

SYAC offers an individualized program with a main focus on stroke development and works with each athlete to reach his or her personal goals. We consider the athlete’s current ability, level of commitment, short term and long terms goals to put together a plan that will make each of them enthusiastic, confident and successful both in and out of the water. SYAC encourages young athletes to explore other after school activities and will create a plan around these other activities to keep them progressing in a positive direction and be highly successful in the water.

BaroneBrandon Barone joins the Stamford YMCA after six years of coaching swimming and water polo throughout Fairfield County. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach at Swim70 in Norwalk, primarily overseeing the 10/under competitive squad and recreational programs but also working with athletes up to the national level. This past March, Swim70 became the 2016 Connecticut Short Course Age Group Champions.

Barone’s swimming career, which began in his native Baltimore, flourished after his move to Westport at the age of seven. A former Westport YMCA Water Wrat, he has competed at the local and state levels, specializing in sprint freestyle. He also competed for the Staples High School Boys Varsity Swim and Water Polo teams in Westport, captaining the latter in his senior year. Barone went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Government in 2010 from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, competing on the varsity swim team all four years.

Barone’s coaching career began at his alma mater, Staples High School, where he assisted with the Girls Varsity Swim and Water Polo teams. He later became head coach of the Boys Varsity Water Polo Team at Staples. Barone then coached swimming for the Westport Water Wrats for about two years, primarily working with the 11-12 year old squad. His role ultimately expanded to include the 9-10 year-old and 8/under programs. Additionally, Barone has coached water polo and swimming at New Canaan Field Club since 2014. Brandon looks forward to bringing his experience in coaching and love for the sport of swimming to the Stamford Y team.
